Supermarket Mother

Joke time! hehehe

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally, he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

"Pardon me," she said, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son who just died recently."

"I'm very sorry," replied the young man, "Is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes," she said. "As I'm leaving, can you say 'Goodbye mother'? It would make me feel much better."

"Sure," answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Goodbye mother!"

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. "How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few things!"

"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.

To Improve Nutrition

1. Buy whole foods -- whether canned, frozen, or fresh from the farm -- and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.

2. Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup, a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.

3. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.

Make his Legs longer

Happy Monday, joke time!

...
There was a young man who was so well-endowed that it was bothering his knee. Three doctors and one nurse were in the operating room to remedy the situation.
The first doctor said, "We’ll just take a big hunk off the end." They discussed it and decided that would affect his sensitivity.

The second doctor said, "We’ll just take a big hunk out of the middle of it." They discussed it and decided it would change the texture and feel of it.

The third doctor said, "We’ll just take a big hunk off the base of it."
They discussed it and said that would give him erection problems.

The doctors looked at the nurse who had tears running down her cheeks.

The nurse cried, "Can’t we just make his legs longer?"

U.S. Secretary of State

Claim: As a teenager, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell learned to speak Yiddish while working in a Jewish-owned baby equipment store in New York.

Status: True.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001]

Unlike today's vista of decrepit buildings, dilapidated housing and rusting junked cars, the South Bronx in 1950 was the home of a large and thriving community, one that was predominantly Jewish. Today a mere remnant of this once-vibrant community survives, but in the 1950's the Bronx offered synagogues, mikvahs, kosher bakeries, and kosher butchers — all the comforts one would expect from a traditional Jewish community.

The baby boom of the post-war years happily resulted in many new young parents. As a matter of course, the South Bronx had its own baby equipment store. Sickser's was located on the corner of Westchester and Fox, and specialized in "everything for the baby," as its slogan ran. The inventory began with cribs, baby carriages, playpens, high chairs, changing tables, and toys.

Mr. Sickser, assisted by his son-in-law Lou Kirshner, ran a profitable business out of the needs of the rapidly-expanding child population. The language of the store was primarily Yiddish, but Sickser's was a place where not only Jewish families but also many non-Jewish ones could acquire the necessary paraphernalia for their newly-arrived bundles of joy.

Business was particularly busy one spring day, so much so that Mr. Sickser and his son-in-law could not handle the unexpected throng of customers. Desperate for help, Mr. Sickser ran out of the store and stopped the first youth he spotted on the street.

"Young man," he panted, "how would you like to make a little extra money? I need some help in the store. You want to work a little?"

The tall, lanky African-American boy flashed a toothy smile back. "Yes, sir, I'd like some work."

"Well then, let's get started." The boy followed his new employer into the store.

Mr. Sickser was immediately impressed with the boy's good manners and demeanor. As the days went by and he came again and again to lend his help, Mr. Sickser became increasingly impressed with the youth's diligence, punctuality and readiness to learn. Eventually Mr. Sickser made him a regular employee at the store. It was gratifying to find an employee with an almost soldier-like willingness to perform even the most menial of tasks, and to perform them well.

From the age of 13 until his sophomore year in college, the young man put in from 12-15 hours a week, at 50 to 75 cents an hour. Mostly, he performed general labor: assembling merchandise, unloading trucks and preparing items for shipments. He seemed, in his quiet way, to appreciate not only the steady employment but the friendly atmosphere Mr. Sickser's store offered. Mr. Sickser learned in time about their helper's Jamaican origins, and he in turn picked up a good deal of Yiddish. In time young Colin was able to converse fairly well with his employers, and more importantly, with a number of the Jewish customers whose English was not fluent.

At the age of 17, the young man, while still working part-time at Sickser's, began his first semester at City College of New York. He fit in just fine with his, for the most part Jewish, classmates — hardly surprising, considering that he already knew their ways and their language. But the heavy studying in the engineering and later geology courses he chose proved quite challenging. Colin would later recall that Sickser's offered the one stable point in his life those days.

After signing up for an ROTC program and serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, the young man quickly rose to the top ranks of the U.S. military. In 1989, under President George Bush, Colin Powell was sworn in as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In 1993, two years after he guided the American victory over Iraq in the Gulf War, Colin Powell visited the Holy Land. Upon meeting Israel's Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir in Jerusalem, he greeted the Israeli with the words Men kent reden Yiddish — "We can speak Yiddish."

As Shamir, stunned, tried to pull himself together, Colin Powell -- now U.S. Secretary of State — continued chatting in his second-favorite language. He had never forgotten his early days in the Bronx.1

Origins: The piece quoted above is an excerpt from the book The Monsey-Kiryat Sefer Express by Zev Roth and is generally accurate in its details: Colin L. Powell was born to Jamaican immigrants living in Harlem in 1937; the family later moved to a largely Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx, where Powell picked up some proficiency in Yiddish from his neighbors and through working at Sickser's baby equipment store in his teenage years. After graduating from City College of New York, Powell entered the military, eventually rising to the rank of 4-star general, serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Operation Desert Storm, and being appointed to the cabinet position of U.S. Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.

If there is any nit to be picked here, it's that this piece leaves many readers with an exaggerated impression of Powell's fluency in Yiddish. Most other sources — including Powell himself — speak of him (nowadays, at least) as having a passing knowledge of the language at best. For example, the New York Daily News noted in a 2000 article about Gen. Powell that he had picked up a "smattering" of Yiddish in his teenage years:
Fourteen-year-old Colin Powell slipped off his jacket and went right to work. He kept working at Sickser's through his teens, earning 75 cents an hour and picking up a smattering of Yiddish with which he often surprised people after he became the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.2
A few months after Powell was named the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in October 1989, a New York Newsday article described him as capable of "sprinkling" his conversation with Yiddish when addressing Jewish officials:
As a boy whose friends and employers at the furniture store were Jewish, Powell picked up a smattering of Yiddish. Vice Adm. John A. Baldwin, an Annapolis graduate who worked closely with Powell a decade ago when they were Pentagon aides, recalls that he was kiddingly nicknamed "the black Jew." When it seemed to suit the moment in dealing with Jewish civilian officials at the Pentagon, Baldwin said, Powell sprinkled his language with Yiddish.3
In 1995, after an 88-year-old New Jersey man created a fake interview with Gen. Powell as if it were conducted entirely in Yiddish and posted it to a Yiddish-English mailing list, fooling many within the Yiddish-speaking community into believing that Powell was fluent in Yiddish, Powell's spokesperson confirmed that he knew a "little" of the language:
A spokesman for Mr. Powell said he hadn't heard about the spoof but confirmed that Gen. Powell does speak a little Yiddish.4
Powell himself was quoted as saying much the same thing during an American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in 2001:
When Colin Powell took to the stage at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in Washington last month, he made it clear that he believed he was among friends. He had even been rumoured to be fluent in Yiddish. "Well, yes, I do understand a bissel" (i.e., "a little"), he said to laughter.5
Regardless, even if Powell knows but a few words of Yiddish, it's one more admirable facet of a man who has led a varied and distinguished life in the service of his country.

While waiting, they wonder if they could possibly get married in Heaven. St. Peter finally shows up and they ask him. St. Peter says, "I don't know, this is the first time anyone has ever asked. Let me go find out," and he leaves.

The couple sit for a couple of months and begin to wonder if they really should get married in Heaven, what with the eternal aspect of it all. "What if it doesn't work out?" they wonder, "Are we stuck together forever?" St. Peter returns after yet another month, looking somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he informs the couple, "you can get married in Heaven." "Great," says the couple, "but what if things don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"

St. Peter, red-faced, slams his clipboard onto the ground. "What's wrong?" exclaims the frightened couple. "Geez!" St. Peter exclaims, "It took me three months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it's going to take for me to find a lawyer?"

Kids watch too much TV?

My daughter is...

Seven ways to break the TV habit
by Peg Rosen

Have your kids watch TV programs, not just TV. This means planning ahead with your child what he wants to watch and turning off the tube when the program is over. "The idea is that you're making a conscious decision to watch something instead of simply flipping around the channels to find something on. Television should be an engaging activity, not simply mind-numbing time to 'chill out,'" says Nell Minow, author of The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies and the mother of two teenagers.

Make television physically inconvenient. Too much of the time, television becomes a backdrop to family life — it blares away in the den or great room while kids are playing, mom's cooking, or the family is eating. "We purposely didn't put a TV on the first floor of our house so that watching television would require a deliberate decision on everyone's part to either head to the basement or to the master bedroom," says Susan Korones Gifford, a New Jersey mother of two kids. Keeping the TV in a closed armoire also helps tame habitual watching. Hiding the clicker isn't a bad idea either because it tends to discourage channel surfing. Educators agree that no child should have a television in his bedroom.

Be firm but open-minded. Shows with sexual content or graphic violence should obviously be off-limits for children. But what about the grayer areas — programs you think are simply inane or off-putting? "Let your child come to you and explain why he wants to watch it, then work out a reasonable compromise," says Minow. "It may simply be a matter of satisfying his curiosity about a show or exposing him to just enough so he can 'talk the talk' at school." If your child does end up liking the program and you find no inherent harm in its content, it's okay to give some slack. "Certainly, you don't want your child to be on a steady diet of mindless TV, but banning silly programs altogether may only give the shows a 'forbidden fruit' sort of appeal," says Aidman.

Avoid setting a firm TV time "allowance" for your child. This seems counter-intuitive, but it's surprisingly effective. "Some days my kids watch TV, some days they don't watch any. But I know if I told them they could watch an hour a day, they'd do anything they could to squeeze in that time," says Gifford. Most educators believe that anything more than two hours a day is too much for children age 2 and older. (The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under 2 watch no television at all.) Like Gifford, you may want to let your child come to you when he wants to watch and keep to yourself what the absolute maximum is. This will avoid tacitly sending the message to him that there's a certain amount he "should" be watching.

Prohibit TV and videos during playdates. Kids need time to play and interact with their peers — television only acts as an impediment. "Make a firm rule in your house, and let other parents know that you expect them to respect your 'no TV on playdates' rule when your child is visiting their home, too," says Minow.

Watch with your kids whenever possible. Knowing what your child is watching is key, so you don't end up being surprised by a show that may seem kid-friendly but isn't. Watching with your kids also provides the opportunity to talk about what's on. "It gives you common ground and a jumping off point for conversation. And since it can become more of a challenge for some parents to talk with their children as they get older, this can be quite important," says Aidman.

Make yourself a role model. Certainly, peer pressure has an influence on our kids' TV watching habits. But ultimately, as with everything else — violence, eating habits, racial attitudes — children are most affected by the example we parents set. "If they see you mindlessly flipping channels, if you 'Shh' them while you watch your favorite sitcom," that's the attitude they'll eventually adopt, says Minow. On the other hand, if your kids see you eagerly sitting down every so often to watch something and concentrating on what you're seeing, they'll recognize the potential for enjoyment TV actually promises.

Detergent Stains on Clothing

Laundry tip for you...This really works!

To remove undiluted detergent or fabric softener stains, try rubbing them with a bar of soap, and washing again, or soaking them in undiluted white vinegar until the spots disappear, at least 15 minutes but no more than 30. (Vinegar is excellent at dissolving soap residue). Launder as usual, and don’t worry, any vinegar smell will wash right out. If this doesn’t work, you could try wetting the stains, and rubbing them with a liquid dish detergent designed to remove grease. To prevent this from happening in the future, try adding the detergent as the machine is filling, and do not add the clothes until after the machine is filled and starts to agitate.

Diet Coke - Diet Pepsi

Claim: Diet Coke and/or Diet Pepsi contain more calories than claimed, but their manufacturers get away with the deception by paying a yearly fine.

Status:
False.

Examples:

[Collected on the Internet, 2003]

There was an old rumour that stated that a particular diet soda company (Coke I believe) paid a fine to print their cans as stating that the soda had 'just one calorie'. According to the rumour, companies who knowingly printed misinformation on the nutritional facts of their product would have to pay a fine. The company in question figured it could make more money by convincing people the product only had 1 calorie than it would cost to pay the fine, meaning a higher profit margin for them.

[Collected on the Internet, 2002]

I heard a rumor today that Diet Coke actually contains 40 calories, and the Coca-Cola company pays a huge fine to the FDA every year to keep "0 calories" on the can. Have you heard anything of this?

[Collected on the Internet, 2004]

Comment: Is it true that Pepsi One is really not one calorie and that Pepsi Co. pays a fine every year for false advertising (because the calorie count is a lot higher than that)?

Origins: How long this particular belief has been around is anyone's guess, but we have recorded sightings of it dating back to 1990. We've encountered claims of Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, or Pepsi One (which are listed as containing zero, zero, and one calories per 12-oz. can, respectively) actually containing 25, 50, 70, or 90 calories, in each case with the parent company's paying an annual fine to continue falsely listing the beverage's caloric content. (A can of non-diet cola typically contains about 100 calories.) The rumor associates most strongly with Diet Coke (which is known as Coca-Cola Light outside the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Great Britain).

In the U.S., laws governing the disclosure of nutritional and caloric content of ingestibles prevent the rumor from being true. The Federal Trade Commission serves as the watchdog in this area — under the Federal Trade Commission Act, it is empowered to "prevent persons, partnerships, or corporations" from using "unfair methods of competition in or affecting commerce, and unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce." At various times in its history it has fined corporations for their having made false or misleading nutritional claims about their products. Such fines are a reaction to what has already taken place; they are not grants of immunity against continued breaking of the rules. Consumers have legal remedy available to them against corporations that have deceived them through certain provisions of the Lanham Act. Many other countries have similar safeguards in place.

Common sense should also serve to rule out what the whispers say about an annual payoff. For health reasons, many potential consumers of diet drinks have to carefully monitor what they ingest. Were the rumor true, diabetics with a love of Diet Coke, for instance, would experience glucose levels spiralling out of control — imagine the lawsuits resulting from that!

This false belief enjoys a measure of popularity because of what it says about common perception of large companies and of the government agencies tasked with shielding consumers from harm: that one will bamboozle its customers for the sake of financial profit, the other will sell out those it is mandated to protect, and neither is to be trusted. Such misgivings also find voice in other rumors, such as the one about bananas imported from Costa Rica being infected with a flesh-eating bacteria.

If there is the tiniest bit of truth to this rumor, it's that even though sodas such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi are advertised as having zero calories, they do have some caloric content from ingredients such as artificial sweeteners, citric acid, and caramel coloring. However, the number of calories per can is still less than one, and FDA regulations allow any food product that contains fewer than five calories per serving to be advertised as calorie-free.

A Workout Schedule

How often, how long and how hard you exercise, and what kinds of exercises you do should be determined by what you are trying to accomplish. Your goals, your present fitness level, age, health, skills, interest and convenience are among the factors you should consider. For example, an athlete training for high-level competition would follow a different program than a person whose goals are good health and the ability to meet work and recreational needs.

Your exercise program should include something from each of the four basic fitness components described previously. Each workout should begin with a warmup and end with a cooldown. As a general rule, space your workouts throughout the week and avoid consecutive days of hard exercise.

Do a Little, Get a Lot

Sharing you guys the Health Tip of the Day.

The notion that good health can come in small tidbits is not really new. Research showing that making small changes can add up to a big difference has been quietly accumulating for a while.

For example, a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004 found that adding just 30 minutes of walking per day was enough to prevent weight gain and encourage moderate weight loss.

And if 30 minutes is still too big a bite? Another study, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, found that three brisk 10-minute walks per day were as effective as a daily 30-minute walk in decreasing risk factors for heart disease.

"Just the act of going from sedentary to moderately active gives you the greatest reduction in your risks," says Helene Glassberg, MD, director of the Preventive Cardiology and Lipid Center at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Clay Stain Removal

My husband is a clay modeler in automotive industry and always comes home with clay stain on his pants. I'm so glad I found this tips how to remove a clay stain.

Red Clay Stain Removal from Clothing
You can remove red clay by first letting it dry thoroughly and brushing off as much as possible. Then you can rub the stain with Murphy’s Oil Soap, leave for 15 minutes, and rinse with cold water. Or, instead of the Murphy’s Oil Soap, you could use a solution of 1 tablespoon borax in a cup of water. If the spot persists, use an enzyme presoak, or soak the item in a gallon of water to which you’ve added a cup of ammonia (or use bleach if the items are white).

Chief Financial Officer

It's Sunday and thought we need a little laugh.

A CEO throwing a party takes his executives on a tour of his opulent mansion. In the back of the property, the CEO has the largest swimming pool any of them has ever seen. The huge pool, however, is filled with hungry alligators. The CEO says to his executives "I think an executive should be measured by courage. Courage is what made me CEO. So this is my challenge to each of you: if anyone has enough courage to dive into the pool, swim through those alligators, and make it to the other side, I will give that person anything they desire. My job, my money, my house, anything!"

Everyone laughs at the outrageous offer and proceeds to follow the CEO on the tour of the estate. Suddenly, they hear a loud splash.

Everyone turns around and sees the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) in the pool, swimming for his life. He dodges the alligators left and right and makes it to the edge of the pool with seconds to spare. He pulls himself out just as a huge alligator snaps at his shoes.

The flabbergasted CEO approaches the CFO and says, "You are amazing. I've never seen anything like it in my life. You are brave beyond measure and anything I own is yours. Tell me what I can do for you." The CFO, panting for breath, looks up and says, "You can tell me who the hell pushed me in the pool!!"

Rise and Work Out!

Individuals with exercise-induced asthma may be less likely to experience an attack in the morning than in the evening, according to the results of a new study.

Researchers conducted exercise tests with 22 people with asthma and 12 healthy patients at 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and measured the resulting lung spasms.

For individuals with asthma, lung spasm scores were 30 percent higher in the evening as compared to the morning.

While factors such as exercise type, environmental conditions and asthma severity can all affect the occurrence of exercise-induced asthma, researchers believe the time of day may also be an important factor to consider when trying to reduce the likelihood of an attack.

How Clean is you Hands?

I'm sure we all know that hand is almost certain one of the source to pass on some kind of virus and diseases it’s because we frequently touching things. Shake hands, I hardly do it to be honest but it depends the person of course.

Anyway, I found this Grim Grades on Clean Hands Report Card article thought of grabbing and post here. With fall and winter comes, kids at school, and the infection from cold viruses that we can’t avoid it but with clean hands at all times it will surely minimize it. Don’t you think?

Here is the article and what do you think "Clean Hands Report Card"

Grim Grades on Clean Hands Report Card
Students Nearly Flunk Clean Hands Quiz; Parents, Teachers Have Room for Improvement.

By: Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News
Reviewed by: Louise Chang, MD

Sept. 7, 2007 -- America's school kids, their parents, and their teachers might need to brush up on their hand hygiene, according to the 2007 "Clean Hands Report Card."

The report card, issued by the Soap and Detergent Association (SDA), comes before this year's cold and flu season starts -- so it's not too late to upgrade your hand-washing habits to help prevent the spread of cold and flu germs.

Overall, the SDA gives students, parents, teachers, and school nurses/health professionals a "C" grade for hand hygiene. Here are the specific grades for each group:

* Students: D
* Dads: D+
* Moms: B-
* Teachers: B-
* School nurses/health professionals: B+

The grades are based on surveys completed over the summer by 508 teachers, 356 health professionals (mostly school nurses), 326 students, 311 dads, and 353 moms.

The surveys included questions about how long people spend washing their hands and how often they wash their hands.

Clean Hands Survey
In the survey, most participants indicated that they always wash their hands after going to the bathroom.

However, less than a quarter of the students and half of the teachers said they always wash their hands before eating lunch.

Only 27% of teachers, about 18% of students, almost 33% of school nurses/health professionals, and about 30% of parents said they always wash their hands after coughing or sneezing.

Many people may not spend long enough lathering up. The CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

But according to the survey, nearly 46% of teachers, 44% of school nurses/health professionals, 51% of students, and 42% of parents said they typically wash their hands for 15 seconds or less.

The parents' survey, completed by telephone, has a 3.8% margin of error. The SDA doesn't list a margin of error for the students, teachers, and school nurses/health professionals' surveys, which were completed at conferences.

English language

... end with '-gry.

Claim:
Three common words in the English language end with '-gry.'

Status: False.

Example:

A RIDDLE THAT'LL KILL YOUR BRAIN!

This is going to make you so MAD!

There are three words in the English language that end in 'gry'. One is 'angry' and the other is 'hungry.' Everyone knows what the third one means, and what it stands for. Everyone uses them every day and, if you listened very carefully, I've given you the third word.

What is it?

Origins: This puzzler may indeed "KILL YOUR BRAIN!" and "make you so MAD!" — it certainly has left plenty of victims racking their brains and scratching their heads in decades past. If you don't already know the answer to this one, let us help you preserve your sanity and whatever gray matter you may have left by telling you . . . there is no answer. Other than 'hungry' and 'angry,' there is no English word ending with the letters 'gry' which the average native speaker of English would recognize, much less "use every day" (and certainly none which a teller of this riddle could claim to have "already given you").

All other words ending in 'gry' which one might find in even the most comprehensive English dictionary are either archaic terms or obsolete variant spellings, such as:

* aggry: variegated glass beads of ancient manufacture, mentioned by various 19th-century writers as having been found buried in parts of Africa.

* begry: an obsolete 15th-century spelling of the word 'beggary' (i.e., extreme poverty).

* conyngry: an obsolete 17th-century spelling of the even more obsolete word 'conynger' (like 'cunningaire' and 'conygarth,' a term meaning 'rabbit warren').

* gry: a unit of measurement proposed by English philosopher John Locke in his 1690 "Essay Concerning Human Understanding."

* higry-pigry: a corruption (along with 'hickery-pickery' and 'hicra picra') of the Greek 'hiera picra' (approximately 'sacred bitters'), a term for many medicines in the Greek pharmacopoeia, particularly a purgative drug composed of aloes and canella bark.

* iggry: an early 20th century British army slang borrowing from the Arabic 'ijri, meaning 'Hurry up!"

* meagry: a rare and obsolete early 17th-century variant meaning 'meager-looking.'

* menagry: obsolete 18th-century alternate spelling of 'menagerie.'

* nangry: a rare and obsolete 17th-century variant of 'angry.'

* podagry: a 17th-century variant spelling of 'podagra,' a medical lexicon term for 'gout.'

* puggry: a 19th-century alternate spelling of 'puggaree' or 'puggree,' derived from the Hindi 'pagri,' a word for a light turban or head covering worn in India.

* skugry: a 16th-century variant spelling of 'scuggery,' meaning 'concealment' or 'secrecy.'

So, what's the point to this puzzler if it has no answer? Some people maintain that is the point: the question was deliberately conceived as an irritating brain-teaser with no correct answer. The roundabout phrasing of the question suggests otherwise, however — more likely it was designed as a trick question rather than a trivia question, perhaps one whose wording has been corrupted over time or whose gimmick was only apparent when the question was delivered orally.

The most common guess is that this riddle is indeed a trick question, but the point of the trick has been lost through the rearrangement of the riddle's wording as it has been passed along through the years. Consider an alternate version of this puzzler:
Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.
This version supports the theory that the first two sentences are red herrings; the catch is that the teller is literally asking you to identify the third word of the phrase "the English language" — there are only three words in the phrase "the English language," the third word ("language") describes something that one uses every day, and "language" is indeed a word which the teller has "already told you." This explanation also supports the contention that this riddle was meant to be presented orally, because a properly punctuated written version would make the gimmick too obvious:
Think of words ending in -GRY. "Angry" and "hungry" are two of them. There are only three words in "the English language." What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.
Another hypothesis is that the current form of the riddle is a corruption of a yet another version, one which must also be delivered orally for its gimmick to make sense:
There are at least three words in the English language that end in g or y. One of them is "hungry" and another is "angry." There is a third word, a short one, which you probably say every day. If you listened carefully to everything I say, you just heard me say it. What is it?
The catch here is that by offering the examples of "hungry" and "angry," the teller misleads the listener into thinking he's asking for a word ending in "GRY" when he's really asking for a word ending in "G or Y." The correct answer in this case is "say," a short word ending in "y" which the teller had pronounced three times in the course of presenting the riddle.

Some people think this puzzler's ability to continue stumping so many people over the years makes it one of the greatest riddles ever. We disagry.

Do a Little, Get a Lot - Part II

It's not only in fitness where small changes can make a difference. The same principles apply at the kitchen table (and the office snack bar).

"Reducing fat intake, cutting down on sugar, eating a piece of fruit instead of a candy bar -- over time, these things can make a difference," says Grossman.

As long as the changes are moving you toward your goal -- be it weight loss, a reduction in cholesterol or blood pressure, or better blood sugar control -- you can get there by taking baby steps, she says.

Moreover, Grossman tells WebMD, making small changes can help give us the motivation to make bigger ones.
h
"A lot of bad eating habits are about not taking charge of your life, and that attitude is often reflected in other areas," says Grossman. On the other hand, she says, when you make small changes at the kitchen table, the rewards may show up in other areas of your life.

"It's the act of taking control that makes the difference in motivating you," says Grossman. "An inner confidence and power begins to develop that can be seen in other areas of life."

Tighten your tummy

Here is a great tummy tightening exercise that is making the rounds in Hollywood. Lie on your back with your left hand behind your neck and your right arm straight out at your side. Keeping your right leg extended straight out in front of you bend the left knee so that the sole of your foot is flat on the floor. Use only your tummy muscles to lift your torso up about eight to ten inches off the floor as you raise your right leg and twist to bring the left elbow towards the right knee. Do this slowly and strongly. Then slowly lower leg and torso at the same time. Do not arch your back. It should stay pressed to the floor! Do ten in total and then switch sides for ten more. Rest a minute and repeat.

Being an only child

Claim: Being an only child (or an only son) automatically exempts you from military service.

Status: False.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001]

As an only son, I have heard a few times before that there is an "only son clause" law with the military. Meaning that since I am an only son, I cannot be drafted for war. Is this true?

Origins: The belief that being the only child (or the only male child) in a family exempts one from compulsory military service is a widespread but erroneous belief, a misunderstanding of Select Service rules enacted after World War II.

Popular fact-based World War II films such as The Fighting Sullivans and Saving Private Ryan have dramatized cases where several brothers from the same family were all killed in action. The Fighting Sullivans recounts the true story of the Sullivan brothers, all five of whom died when the ship to which they were assigned, the USS Juneau, was sunk by a Japanese torpedo during the Battle of Guadalcanal on 13 November 1942. Saving Private Ryan tells a fictionalized story based on the real experience of Sgt. Fritz Niland of the 101st Airborne, who was removed from a combat zone in France and sent home by the Army after all three of his brothers were killed in action during the same week in June 1944.

In 1948, in order to safeguard the only remaining sons of families that had lost other children during World War II, the United States passed a law that exempted sole surviving sons from the draft. This exemption applied only when one or more children (sons or daughters) from the family had already died or been killed during military service. In 1964 this law was modified to extend the exemption to sons who were the only surviving male offspring of fathers who had died as a result of military service, and at the same time the exemption was altered to apply only to peacetime drafts. This law was modified again in 1971 to extend the exemption to any son (not necessarily the only surviving son) whose father or brother (or sister) had died in military service.

So, to clear up the misunderstandings, note that:

* You are not exempt from military service simply because you are an only child or an only son. You are exempt only if one of your siblings or parents (mothers are now included as well) has died as a result of military service.

* You do not have to be a sole remaining son to meet this requirement - the exemption applies to all remaining sons from qualified families.

* This exemption is not in effect during wartime.

(Although all American men are required to register with the Selective Service upon turning 18, the U.S. does not currently have a peacetime draft, having converted to an all-volunteer military in 1973. Whether a draft held while U.S. forces were engaged in military action but war had not officially been declared - as in the current situation - would be considered a "peacetime" draft or a "wartime" draft is debatable; our query to the Selective Service received only the circular answer that since no draft is in effect at this time, we are considered to be at peace.)

Beauty Tip of the Day

"Beauty isn't just looks; it's personality that people want. Looks are just bonuses that can be an advantage. Never feel pressured to be like someone else; be yourself."

Yep just be yourself, be proud and be happy. Some people will say whatever they want anyway, make fun to those who are unfortunate looking but we know they make themselves a fool.

Excuse Letters

This is reminds me when i was in elementary. Funny!

The routine is familiar: when a student is late or absent from school, a letter from the parents must be supplied for the absence to be excused. Sometimes such letters suggest that the parents were excused from school too many times in their own youth.

"My son is under a doctor’s care and should not take P.E. today. Please execute him."

"Please excuse Lisa for being absent. She was sick, and I had her shot."

"Dear School: Please ekscuse John being absent on Jan. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and also 33."

"Please excuse Roland from P.E. for a few days. Yesterday he fell out of a tree and misplaced his hip."

"Please excuse Tommy for being absent yesterday. He had diarrhea, and his boots leak."

"Please excuse Jimmy for being. It was his father’s fault."

"Please excuse Jennifer for missing school yesterday. We forgot to get the Sunday paper off the porch, and when we found it Monday, we thought it was Sunday."

"Sally won’t be in school a week from Friday. We have to attend her funeral."

"My daughter was absent yesterday because she was tired. She spent a weekend with the Marines."

"Please excuse Jason for being absent yesterday. He had a cold and could not breed well."

"Please excuse Burma, she has been sick and under the doctor."

"Maryann was absent December 11-16, because she had a fever, sore throat, headache, and upset stomach. Her sister was also sick, fever, and sore throat, her brother had a low grade fever and ached all over. I wasn’t the best either, sore throat and fever. There must be something going around, her father even got hot last night."

No Cockpit

For a break joke time! wink*

As the airliner pushed back from the gate, the flight attendant gave the passengers the usual information regarding seat belts etc. Finally, she said, "Now sit back and enjoy your trip while your captain, Judith Campbell and crew take you safely to your destination."

Joe sitting in the 8th row thought to himself, "Did I hear her right - is the captain a woman? I think I better have scotch and soda."
"That’s another thing," said the attendant, "We no longer call it the cockpit."

When the attendants came by with drink cart, he said, "Did I understand you right? Is the captain a woman?"

"Yes," said the attendant, "In fact, this entire crew is female."

"My God," said Joe, "I’d better have two scotch and sodas. I don’t know what to think of all those women up there in the cockpit."

Bleach Spills on Clothing

I never thought about this. Once I spill bleach on clothing i just throw them out.

Bleach is not a stain, it removes color; therefore there is no stain to remove. However, if you spill bleach on a single-colored article of clothing, you can try using Rit dye to restore the color. It is very effective, and quite easy to use - you can even do the entire process in your washing machine. It comes in a wide range of colors, so you should be able to find a color to match, or you can even mix two or more of the colors. The color is as permanent as any clothing dye, so it will fade, but not any more quickly than other dyes normally do. After you have completed the dying process, you can help to set the color by soaking the items for an hour in a solution of 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1/2 gallon of water. If the rinse water shows color after an hour, repeat the procedure.

Reduce Stress

Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. Thought for the day: When seeing red, think pink clouds….then float on them.

Posture

This is great to know.
Stick out your chest when walking for exercise. It looks better and you breathe easier. Racewalking posture is head up, chest up, and a slight forward lean from the ankles. While walking fast, do not lean forward at the waist or thrust your head forward.

Keep portions in check

Studies have shown that the more you are served, the more you will eat. Serve yourself small portions of rich, high-calorie foods and large portions of healthy foods like vegetables, salads, and broth-based soups.

Before I managed to fill up my dinner plate when I’m done, I’m done. No more seconds and it did help me lose some weight.

Fact or Fiction

Now this you wont see everyday...read on...

Claim: A policeman promised a waitress half the winnings from his lottery ticket. All the numbers came up, and he kept his word by sharing the jackpot with her.

Status: True.

Origins: Not just the fanciful plot of the Nicolas Cage movie It Could Happen To You, this did happen to one lucky Yonkers plate-slinger back in 1984.

Phyllis Penzo was a waitress at Sal's Pizzeria in Yonkers, New York, for twenty-four years. During that long tenure, she saw nice customers, difficult customers, generous tippers, and skinflints. But Robert Cunningham, a police detective from nearby Dobbs Ferry, was in a class by himself. Cunningham gave Penzo a tip of $142,857.50 a year for twenty years.

Cunningham, a thirty-year police veteran, was a regular diner at Sal's, where he liked to order linguine with clam sauce and maintain a steady flow of banter with Penzo, other employees, and regular customers. True to his lighthearted style, Cunningham was making a sort of joke on Friday evening, March 30, 1984, when he offered his favorite waitress an unusual tip: a half-interest in a lottery ticket. Each picked three of the six numbers; Cunningham walked across the street and bought their ticket.

Penzo laughed, then forgot the incident until the next night, when the detective walked into Sal's Pizzeria after work with the winning ticket triumphantly clutched in his hand. It was worth six million dollars: three million for each of them. Cunningham, who ordinarily might have left a couple of dollars on the restaurant table, had no regrets about splitting the prize. After all, he says, Penzo helped pick the winning numbers.

The Schmoozed Award

The 'Power of Schmooze Award' is The Award for bloggers who “effortlessly weave their way in and out of the blogosphere, leaving friendly trails and smiles, happily making new friends along the way. They don’t limit their visits to only the rich and successful, but spend some time to say hello to new blogs as well. They are the ones who engage others in meaningful conversations, refusing to let it end at a mere hello - all the while fostering a sense of closeness and friendship".

Thank you very much Krystyna for giving me this award, I truly appreciate it. Hugs & Kisses to you.

I'm suppose to award 5 others but this is so hard. I'll post it later need time to decide. Have a great week everyone. God bless!
