All smiles

Joke time for a change...hehehe...

Three dead bodies turn up at the mortuary, all with very big smiles on their faces. The coroner calls the police to tell them what has happened.

"First body: Frenchman, 60, died of heart failure while making love to
his mistress. Hence the enormous smile, Inspector", says the Coroner.

"Second body: "Scotsman, 25, won a thousand dollars on the lottery,
spent it all on whisky. Died of alcohol poisoning, hence the smile."

The Inspector asked, "What of the third body?"

"Ah," says the coroner, "this is the most unusual one.
Sue-Ellen, a blond from Oklahoma, 30, struck by lightning."

"Why is she smiling then?" inquires the Inspector.

"Thought she was having her picture taken."

When to Exercise

The hour just before the evening meal is a popular time for exercise. The late afternoon workout provides a welcome change of pace at the end of the work day and helps dissolve the day’s worries and tensions.

Another popular time to work out is early morning, before the work day begins. Advocates of the early start say it makes them more alert and energetic on the job.

Among the factors you should consider in developing your workout schedule are personal preference, job and family responsibilities, availability of exercise facilities and weather. It's important to schedule your workouts for a time when there is little chance that you will have to cancel or interrupt them because of other demands on your time.

You should not exercise strenuously during extremely hot, humid weather or within two hours after eating. Heat and/or digestion both make heavy demands on the circulatory system, and in combination with exercise can be an overtaxing double load.

DEFINING FITNESS

Physical fitness is to the human body what fine tuning is to an engine. It enables us to perform up to our potential. Fitness can be described as a condition that helps us look, feel and do our best. More specifically, it is:

"The ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and alertly, with energy left over for enjoying leisure- time activities and meeting emergency demands. It is the ability to endure, to bear up, to withstand stress, to carry on in circumstances where an unfit person could not continue, and is a major basis for good health and well-being."

Physical fitness involves the performance of the heart and lungs, and the muscles of the body. And, since what we do with our bodies also affects what we can do with our minds, fitness influences to some degree qualities such as mental alertness and emotional stability.

As you undertake your fitness program, it’s important to remember that fitness is an individual quality that varies from person to person. It is influenced by age, sex, heredity, personal habits, exercise and eating practices. You can’t do anything about the first three factors. However, it is within your power to change and improve the others where needed.

Fact or Fiction - HIV-positive

Claim: When the Red Cross conducted a volunteer blood drive at a local high school recently, they uncovered a shocking truth: 20% of the student donors were HIV-positive.

Status: False.

Example: [Collected by Royko, 1992]

A volunteer blood drive was held at the Conant High School. It was for senior students only. Blood was given by 317 seniors. The blood has since been tested, and 61 tested positive for the HIV virus.

Origins: The rumor of a large number of HIV-positive high school kids having being discovered through the Red Cross' rejection of their blood has been with us since at least 1987, and it has moved around the country at will, attaching itself to whichever high school just hosted a blood drive.

Though its venue changes, the story remains the same — some horrific number of fresh-faced youngsters are discovered to be living under a death sentence. The infected percentage of the student body varies from 10 to 82 depending on who is doing the telling, with 12% (1 in 8) and 20% (1 in 5) the clear front runners.

For example (the legend is certainly not limited to these communities), the rumor has raced through Chicago (1992, 20% of the students in one particular high school), Los Angeles (1992, 12%), Dubuque (1996, "dozens of students"), Kansas City (1996, 15%), Orlando (1992, "dozens"), Seattle (1992, 15%), St. Petersburg (1991, 20%), Orange County, CA (1987, 14%), Sonoma County, CA (82%, 2001).

What's the real story here? The American Red Cross began testing blood for HIV in 1985. By 1996 there had been 28 donors confirmed as HIV-positive, out of 1.65 million blood donations nationwide. Only one of those infected was a high school student. End of story.

The use of specific numbers in the claim lends the dire tidings more authority, yet they are still hogwash. For instance, with regard to the rumor we quote as our example (Conant High School, blood drawn from 317 seniors, 61 tested positive for HIV), we know the real numbers for that school's blood drive: 125 students and 37 faculty members gave blood, and not one of them was HIV-positive.

In 1992 in the small Texas town of Bogata, a health worker's announcement that she knew of six cases of AIDS at the small (197 students) Rivercrest High School appeared to confirm the rumor. Dona Atkins (then Dona Spence), a case manager at Ark-Tex Council of Governments, a regional planning agency, said each of the teens came to her for counselling. She never named names or produced the teens but always stood by her story. On the other hand, no confirmation of what she asserted ever emerged, no infected teenagers came forward, none subsequently sickened and died, and the Texas Department of Health reported that its investigation could find no basis for her claims. Moreover, she'd been caught telling untruths before, stating she'd served as an Army nurse for 17 years, including in Vietnam, yet military records showed she wasn't a registered nurse in Texas or California and had two short stints in the military, neither of which were in Vietnam. She would have had a motive for telling a false story; her husband had contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion, and his illness and subsequent demise in 1989 had moved her to speak to teenagers and the community about AIDS prevention. It is not unknown for those who feel their important messages aren't being heard clearly enough to personalize the dangers they warn against by inventing especially tragic victims whose stories they can use to drive home the validity of their admonishments.

The heightened sense of awareness among teenagers that AIDS is a real possibility in their lives probably lies at the bottom of this rumor. It is known that HIV is discovered through blood tests, and that the Red Cross runs such tests on all the blood donations it collects. Teen fear plus a blood drive makes this rumor a natural to sweep through a school once the Bloodmobile has driven off down the street.

Fears are also likely fed by the sight of school chums being told they can't donate blood. Though potential donors are turned away if they are not feeling well, have slightly elevated temperatures, demonstrate low red cell counts, have recently weathered fevers or colds, have gotten tattoos in the last year, or if it has not been the required 56 days since they last gave blood, none of those explanations are likely to occur to the students who notice that buddies who went to give blood afterwards lack the telltale bandages on their arms. The rumor of the turn-downs being due to AIDS is a tantalizing scenario likely to be spread by impressionable high schoolers. Yet, though superficially plausible, the rationale behind such a whisper is seriously flawed — were someone unknowingly contaminated, said infection wouldn't be discovered until the donated blood was examined back at the lab because there is no way on site to tell whether a person tests positive for HIV.

It's possible parents and teachers do their bit to keep this rumor up and running — the use of scare tactics to dissuade young people from engaging in risky behaviors is nothing new. A story of a nearby high school's blood drive turning up so many HIV-positive kids would serve to drive home the message that there's nothing safe about teen sex.

CLOTHING

All exercise clothing should be loose-fitting to permit freedom of movement, and should make the wearer feel comfortable and self-assured.

As a general rule, you should wear lighter clothes than temperatures might indicate. Exercise generates great amounts of body heat. Light-colored clothing that reflects the sun's rays is cooler in the summer, and dark clothes are warmer in winter. When the weather is very cold, it's better to wear several layers of light clothing than one or two heavy layers. The extra layers help trap heat, and it's easy to shed one of them if you become too warm.

In cold weather, and in hot, sunny weather, it's a good idea to wear something on your head. Wool watch or ski caps are recommended for winter wear, and some form of tennis or sailor’s hat that provides shade and can be soaked in water is good for summer.

Never wear rubberized or plastic clothing, such garments interfere with the evaporation of perspiration and can cause body temperature to rise to dangerous levels.

The most important item of equipment for the runner is a pair of sturdy, properly-fitting running shoes. Training shoes with heavy, cushioned soles and arch supports are preferable to flimsy sneakers and light racing flats.

Getting your Child

...off to a good start at school

Before your kids hit the books this fall, have a heart-to-heart about grades, friends and activities, says TODAY contributor Dr. Ruth Peters.

I surely need to do this to my daughter. She easily get distructed. Oh yeah- I talked to her the other day that staying up late is over!

By Ruth A. Peters, Ph.D.
TODAYShow.com contributor

We all want a smooth transition from summer to school, but face it folks,
that’s probably not going to happen! The time for staying up late, sleeping
in, wearing PJ’s most of the day and hanging out with friends is quickly
coming to an end as summer wanes and the back-to-school sales are in full
force. So, whether your child is attending grade-, middle- or high school
there are some areas and issues that need to be dealt with, discussed and
delegated as school winds up again. Ready? Let’s take a look at what you
can do now to help your child get off to a good start at school!

Set expectations reasonably and wisely

Early morning expectations
Start now by slowly lowering the bedtime at night so that the alarm clock will not seem to ring so early the following morning. Even if your child does not, at this time, need to get up early, do begin this regimen to get their body clock back into sync with the school bus schedule and the responsibilities that need to take place before leaving the house in the morning. Review whether showers will be taken at night or first thing in the morning, and I suggest that brushing teeth and hair, getting fully dressed (including shoes and socks) all occur before coming to the breakfast table. Parents “lose” their kids at breakfast as they memorize the back of the cereal box, so let’s get work (dressing) completed before play (box-reading) and nix the television or electronic games before school. Also, consider the new school dress codes that are arriving this fall when shopping at the mall — many schools are putting the kibosh on sleeveless tops and shorts that end more than two inches above the knee. Check your local school district’s web site for specifics so that you don’t
waste money on clothing that can’t be used. The point of planning ahead in terms of getting ready on time is to lower the early morning drama that attacks almost all households the first few weeks of school — so think ahead, plan and set up the necessary structure for your children. A chart of what must be completed before breakfast, taped onto the refrigerator or bathroom mirror, will make it clear what needs to be accomplished so that your children will be ready on time.

Expectations regarding friends
Especially if your child hung around with some not-so-desirable buddies
last school year, it’s a good idea at this time to discuss a few folks who
you will be discouraging your child from having friendships with, but also
focus on the ones that you trust and feel are good friends and role models
for your children. Stress that your child’s friends should be reasonably
courteous, not get into trouble at school, take school seriously and
receive at least average grades. Your child may balk at your “picking his
friends for him,” but you have the right and the responsibility as a parent
to promote kids with good values and behaviors. Remember, who your child
hangs around with at school may be out of your control, but you certainly
hold the reins to after-school and weekend activities.

Expectations for grades, behaviors, detentions and the consequences that
follow

This is an excellent point in the school year to review your grade expectations for your child. Consider previous years and gauge your child’s true ability on past grades, teacher reports as well as standardized testing. And, then, raise the bar a bit. Numerous psychological studies have shown that kids who were expected by parents and teachers to perform higher than would be predicted from their actual intellectual tests do perform better — basically, if kids think that they can do it, they can!
So, be specific — “No grade below a B unless there is a specific problem that we are aware of and are working on” may fit your child, or a higher or lower expectation may be appropriate. Also discuss what consequences will occur at home if detentions, tardiness or school skipping occur. These should be dealt with seriously, and home-based consequences such as weekend freedoms, electronics usage, bedtimes, curfews or allowances can be attached to behavior and performance at school.

Cleaning Tips

This morning I grabbed a sweater from the closet and i saw my favorite leather jacket and remembered that has an ink stain on it. I got a chance to search around how to get rid the stain, lucky me found it and it works! I'm sharing this to you guys...give it a try.

Ink Stain Removal from Leather
An effective way to remove the ink stains on leather items is by using either hair spray or Armor All. Just spray the stain, then wipe it with a soft cloth. To be sure that this will not effect the dyes in your leather, be sure to try this in a non-visible area first.

Iron On Patch Removal
You should be able to remove an iron on patch by reheating the patch with an iron to warm and loosen the glue. Working from the edges, slowly peel off the patch. You will likely need to re-heat the patch a few times. If any glue residue remains after you get the patch off, you can try rubbing the area with lighter fluid.

Tree Sap Removal from Clothing
To get tree sap off clothing try Goof Off (or a product similar to that), or WD40. Spray the product on the stain, rub in, then launder as usual. For a homemade treatment, try using mayonnaise in a similar fashion.

Vary Stance

...to Reduce Knee Strain

Reducing stress and strain on the knees is a good idea, even for those with no history of knee problems.

One study examined how varying foot placement affects the tibio-femoral compressive forces and tensile forces in the cruciate ligaments.

Wide-stance squats and leg presses were shown to decrease posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) stress, while a narrow stance significantly increased it, as did placing feet low on the leg-press plate.

The angle of the foot (turned out or toes pointed straight ahead) did not significantly affect knee forces.

It is particularly interesting to note that neither exercise, regardless of variation, produced tension in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the site most commonly associated with knee problems.

Stifling words during fight deadly for women

Study: Those who stayed silent 4 times more likely to die of health probs.

I usually not talk to my husband when we argue...hmmm very interesting read on...

NEW YORK - Women who force themselves to stay quiet during marital arguments appear to have a higher risk of death, a new study shows. Depression and irritable bowel syndrome are also more common in these women.

Such “self-silencing” during conflict may have provided an evolutionary survival advantage long ago, and unfortunately may be a necessity for women in abusive relationships, Dr. Elaine D. Eaker of Eaker Epidemiology Enterprises in Gaithersburg, Maryland, the study’s lead author, told Reuters Health.

SOURCE: MSNBC

Eaker and her colleagues found that, over a 10-year period, the most striking finding was that women who self-silenced were four times more likely to die than women who expressed themselves freely during marital arguments.

The current study is the first, Eaker says, to look at behavior, heart disease and mortality in the context of marital relationships. While many studies have looked into marital status and quality and heart disease, she added, “We had some other questions that I think get more at the dynamics of how people really feel in a marriage, what actually happens in a marriage.”

Eaker and her team looked at 3,682 men and women participating in the Framingham Offspring Study, most of whom were in their 40s and 50s at the beginning of the study. Study participants were followed for 10 years for the development of heart disease and for death from any cause.

The study confirmed that marriage is good for men’s health — compared with unmarried men, husbands were nearly half as likely to die during the follow-up period.

The researchers also found that men whose wives came home from work upset about their jobs were 2.7 times as likely to develop heart disease as men with less work-stressed wives.

It’s possible, Eaker and her team suggest, that a wife’s problems on the job could be upsetting to a husband because he is unable to “protect” her in this arena.

“Attention has been focused on the changing roles of women,” they note in the July/August issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, “the changing roles and expectations of husbands/men also need to be scrutinized and understood.”

The findings underscore the importance of healthy communication within marriage, Eaker says, although she does urge that other researchers confirm the results “before we make a lot out of them.”

Nevertheless, she concludes, “both spouses really need to allow another person a safe environment to express feelings when they’re in conflict,” both for their own health, and for the health of the relationship.

Cautions with Sit-ups

Exercise Tip of the Day

Full sit-ups can be a problem because the hip flexors attach to the lower spine, so doing a lot of sit-ups can cause or worsen low back pain. This is why crunches, which engage the abdominals but do not involve the hip flexors, are usually recommended. Crunches are safe for most people, but you should never do any exercise that causes pain.

Fifteen seconds is better than five, though five is still better than nothing when it comes to improving flexibility.

A new study out of the United Kingdom suggests a significant benefits from holding each stretch at least 15 seconds as opposed to five seconds or not stretching at all.

Twenty-four college students (average age 20) participated in the five-week training study.

Those in the five-second group performed each stretch nine times, while those in the 15-second group did each stretch three times.

While both groups improved their passive range of motion, those who held their stretches longer showed greater improvements in active range of motion as well.

Energy Systems

LifeTips Exercise Tip of the Day

Most sports, especially team sports, are anaerobic, with short bursts of activity. The aerobic energy system doesn’t kick in until 3-5 minutes of continuous activity. Train the energy system you need for your sport. Football and basketball players, for instance, need to do short-to-moderate sprints and intervals, and have little need to run long distances. Aerobic sports, like long distance running, endurance cycling, distance swimming, triathlon, mountaineering, etc. require long, sustained training routines. Soccer players benefit from aerobic training, and tennis can have both aerobic and anaerobic components, depending on how you play.
